Blast off with the Blue Earth County Library! Kids ages newborn to 17 are invited to take part in the 2019 “A Universe of Stories” Summer Reading Program at the county libraries in Mankato, Lake Crystal, and Mapleton. Participants are able to earn prizes for time spent reading in four age categories; 0 to 3, 4 to 8, 9 to 11, and 12 to 17. Sign-up begins Monday, June 3 and continues with scheduled fun, educational programs twice weekly in June and July. The program serves an important role in preventing learning loss during the summer months while school is out and can help kids improve their reading skills.

This year, participants will enjoy out of this world programs such as Hy-Vee’s KidsFit where they’ll participate in team and individual relays, and Mike Prestby’s “Take Me to Your Readers!,” which will feature magic, puppets and comedy. Returning favorites will also be making appearances throughout the summer, including the Minnesota Zoomobile, Alfy’s World of Robotic Puppets, “One World, Many Stories” with Randy Christensen, and a special Saturday event – Airplane Rides with Mankato’s Experimental Aircraft Association. Programs take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Mankato Auditorium. For a complete listing of programs, visit and click on the events calendar.

Adults, you can get involved too! Shake up your reading by playing Summer Book Bingo with the Blue Earth County Library. Challenge yourself to get out of your reading comfort zone and read some different genres from categories on the bingo card. Cards can be picked up at the adult or children’s reference desk, or print one from our website. Complete a bingo by writing the title and the date that you read each book in the square. Bring your card with a completed bingo to the adult reference desk to claim your reward.
